Walkman Fun
Fun may not be the right word to use in this context, but I have read an article over at techlounge, which explains how it is possible to remove the volume limiter on the player. However, it more importantly shows how you can get into the testing menus.
- Turn the player on as normal.
- Press the hold key so that the display reads ‘Hold On’.
- While holding down the Artist Link button (on the side), press:
Up, Down, Option, Up, Down, Right, Left, Right, Left, Left, Play, Option. - Press the hold key again, so that the display reads ‘Hold Off’.
There are 3 main menus which are navigable by pressing the Up and Down buttons, and Right to enter the submenus. The Play/Pause button can be used to enter settings, and Back to return to the menus.
To exit test mode, press and hold the Back button for 1.5 seconds or more.
I made the mistake of entering the hard drive check, which takes a long time – don’t do it unless you’re having problems.

Not sure what to suggest. Try posting on the original site I got this information from, I’m no Walkman expert.

i was wondering if it is because i could not use the connect software in the first place and had to use sonicstage???????????????????
April 25th, 2006 at 7:20 pm
Nope, I use SonicStage with mine and it works perfectly well. Are you sure you’re following the steps correctly?
April 26th, 2006 at 4:15 pm
hi jim
yes following the steps exactly
cant understand it at all
when the hold button is on hold ???how does it work anyway cos surely by being on hold it stops all functions?????????????????
April 26th, 2006 at 7:33 pm
Hold button stops the buttons’ normal functions, but while holding down the Artist Link button, and putting in that sequence, the player takes notice.
April 27th, 2006 at 5:40 pm
hi jim
the hold buton might stop the normal functions but on mine i cannot do anything

April 28th, 2006 at 5:15 pm
still no joy
do you think i would get anywhere if i just deleted everything and started from scratch????????????
i have been using sonicstage to download my music but i got an update of connect yesterday
i suppose sony might be getting it right after all so i dont know whether or not to use the connect or stick to sonicstage??????????????????????????????????????????????????????

I don’t think it has anything to do with which software you’re using, you have to do it when it’s not connected to the PC, during normal operation. Just turn your player on, and follow the instructions as closely as you can, take time to read it as you do it.
May 8th, 2006 at 5:54 pm
hi jim
i have read that the artist link button should click when pressed
is this the case in your opinion cos mine dont
it only pushes in or down with great difficulty
May 9th, 2006 at 8:28 am
Perhaps you’re not pushing it hard enough then.
May 9th, 2006 at 5:16 pm
hi jim
ive pushed it down and in and nothing
the only thing i get is connect to complient software message
May 15th, 2006 at 8:43 am
You have to do this while you’re on HOLD mode. The screen should display ‘Hold ON’, then you can start the key sequence.
May 16th, 2006 at 6:13 pm
17 jim
done that //on hold but the artist link button does nothing
June 11th, 2006 at 4:01 pm
i have just found out that for sonic stage to work with the artist link button then you have to download the latest version ((( version 4)))) it then allowsuse of the artist link button
i found that the volume did NOT increase that much really though

The new version of SonicStage (now dubbed version ‘CP’) allows use of the Artist Link functions, as well as not raping your computer every time it’s run, unlike Connect Player used to.
